Everything You Need to Know About Oral Cancer Prevention and Care During Treatment

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. This means we will be hearing more about oral cancer in the coming weeks. It also means that many of you have been on a journey to regain your health, and after treatment, you’re beginning to notice effects on your mouth. These side effects are not uncommon as there are several physical changes that occur during Mouth cancer treatment. However, take a minute to dig deeper into your own personal oral wellbeing. If you feel something is abnormal, or have any questions or concerns, talk to your oncology team immediately.

Tips for Caring for your mouth while and after treatment

When I was diagnosed with mouth cancer, the first thing I did was google “Treatment for Mouth Cancer.” What I found was pretty scary. Because of that, I started doing lots of research on how to care for my mouth during treatment. Here are some tips for you to keep in mind so that you can focus on taking care of yourself without worrying about your mouth.

Taking care of your mouth is often one of the first things people begin to neglect when starting Treatment for Mouth Cancer Many times, I see people feeling pain and discoloration as a result of their treatment regimen and it can cause individuals to feel discouraged. This is where proper brushing and flossing comes in. Taking care of your mouth through brushing and flossing will help prevent cavities, increase overall dental health, and provide an important routine that helps distract you from some of the pain or discomfort caused by chemotherapy.

Simple steps that people tell me have helped them include:

  • Keep your mouth moist all the time, try to use plenty of water or use sugar free candies which make saliva in your mouth.
  • Brush your teeth or use alcohol free flax after every meal which helps your mouth clean and gum free. Use chemical free toothpaste.
  • You can also use products that care for your mouth (alcohol free).

People may also try:

  • Need to follow healthy diets, when you eat something which get first contact with your mouth.
  • Eat food contains Calcium, Minerals, Green veggies, Beans and Nuts.
  • Also contact your doctor what to eat and what not.

Precautions That you have to follow.

Don’t use tobacco and Alcohol

Smoking has been linked to various types of cancer — including cancer of the lung, mouth, throat, larynx, pancreas, bladder, cervix and kidney. What makes nicotine so dangerous is that it affects tissues in your body that are still growing. It also delivers harmful substances to your body faster than any other substance.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle and Do physically Active

Now that summer is in full swing, it’s important to be aware of ways to help maintain a healthy weight and stay physically active. Maintaining a healthy weight might lower the risk of various types of cancer, including cancer of the breast, prostate, lung, colon, and kidney. Physical activity counts, too. In addition to helping you control your weight, physical activity on its own might lower the risk of breast cancer and colon cancer.

Conclusion

Planning diagnostic and treatment strategies for Mouth cancer patients is a key component of any cancer control programme. The best hospitals in India for cancer treatment give effective cancer care plans to cure cancer patients or prolong their life to an extent where they have a good quality of life. In order for a diagnosis and treatment plan to be effective, it must never be developed in isolation.
