The United States and Russia were already cold. That relationship has deteriorated further since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Al-Jazeera reports that John Sullivan told Russia’s state news agency Tass on Monday. He was asked if the Russian and US embassies could be closed. In response, he said that any such move would be a “big mistake”.
Russia launched its operation in Ukraine on February 24. Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the operation as a turning point in the country’s history. According to Putin, the United States has been insulting Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. They have resisted US domination through the Ukraine campaign.
A remark by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken last month elicited quite a response. He dedicated the song “We Are Never Getting Back Together” by popular American singer Taylor Swift to Putin. Asked if Blinken signaled the closure of the embassy through the song, Sullivan said, “We will never be completely apart.
On the contrary, the US ambassador believes that Russia could sever diplomatic ties. “They can (sever diplomatic relations),” he said. There is a possibility. Although I think that would be a big mistake.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said yesterday that they were interested in holding talks with the United States on nuclear weapons. However, at the moment such discussions are unlikely.
In 1933, Washington established diplomatic relations with Moscow. The two countries have a long history of animosity since then. Nevertheless, the relationship was never severed. However, US relations with Russia have deteriorated since the attack on Ukraine. The United States and its allies have imposed sanctions on Moscow.
