Police said that one person was killed and several others were injured by a car that crashed into a crowd of people in central Berlin’s busy shopping district on Wednesday.
Thilo Cablitz, a police spokesperson, said that the driver was briefly held by passersby before being turned over to police.
Police said it was unclear if the crash was an accident.
It happened just across from Breitscheidplatz at 10:30 AM (0830 GMT), where a sympathizer of the Islamic State group drove a truck through a Christmas Market in 2016.
Around 130 emergency personnel responded to the call. Several people sustained serious injuries and were transported by helicopter to hospitals.
Cablitz stated that there are many seriously injured people amongst the more than a dozen injures.
A silver Renault Clio with a Berlin license plate drove first into a crowd at Tauentzienstrasse, Rankestrasse. Then it returned to the road and then drove up Marburgerstrasse 150m (165 yards) away.
“Happened so quickly”
Frank Vittchen, a witness to the incident, said that he was at a nearby fountain when he heard a loud crash and then saw a person fly through air.
He said that the vehicle was driving at a high speed onto the pavement, and didn’t brake. The impact caused the windows to shatter.
He said, “It all happened so quickly.”
Since the 2016 attack on the Christmas market, Germany has been on alert for car-ramming attacks. Most of these were committed by people with psychological problems.
It took place close to the scene of a fatal attack that occurred on December 19, 2016.
