What Is YSR Housing? What Do You Need To Know About The Andhra Pradesh YSR Housing Scheme?

Along with food & clothing, shelter is a basic need of man to ensure that he leads a safe & dignified life. Without the fulfillment of basic requirements, man cannot aspire to higher things. But sadly, poverty and income inequality in the world deprives millions of people of elementary necessities such as housing.

The issue of the housing crisis in India demands utmost seriousness and immediate action. Both the central & state governments have launched various schemes to provide affordable housing to the economically weaker sections of society.

The Andhra Pradesh state government has started the YSR Housing Plan. It was launched on July 12, 2019, by Chief Minister Sri Jaganmohan Reddy in memory of his late father and former chief minister of Andhra, Sri Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy.

All About YSR Housing Schemes

The scheme, popularly called the YSR Jagananna Housing Scheme, was launched under a promise made in the election manifesto of the YSR Congress by Jaganmohan Reddy. It was announced in the first state budget of the new government by finance minister Sri Rajendranath Reddy. He has provided adequate budgetary allocation for YSR Housing schemes.

The scheme will primarily benefit the economically weaker section (EWS) and people belonging to the Low Income Group (LIG) and Middle Income Group (MIG). Although the scheme was launched in 2019, the project was delayed by two years due to the pandemic and was formally launched on June 3, 2021.

So the YSR Housing Scheme 2022 can be termed an ‘ongoing’ project.

The scheme entails the following three categories:

  • YSR EWS Housing Scheme: Provides pucca houses to the poor & underprivileged sections.
  • PMAY-YSR Urban Housing Scheme: Distribution of pucca houses to LIG & MIG sections in urban areas. It is a joint venture between the central government and the AP state.
  • PMAY-YSR Gramin Housing Scheme: The primary objective of this scheme is to develop housing infrastructure in rural areas. The land is given free of cost to the beneficiaries, which can also ask for monetary support up to Rs.1.80 lakh for construction.

About 30 lakh houses are expected to be built under this scheme in two phases. Under phase 1, 15.6 lakh houses will be built at an estimated outlay of Rs.28,000 Cr and are scheduled for completion by the end of 2022. Phase 2 involves over 12 lakh houses at the cost of Rs.22,000 Cr.

The Andhra Pradesh State Housing Corporation Limited (APSHCL) is partnering with top builders to provide quality housing to the people.
