The Advantages of Music Lessons

Have you ever thought about why people sing in the shower? My younger brother used to sporadically sing out tunes throughout the day, especially in the shower, when he was a teenager. While I didn’t appreciate it at the time, I now see why! It’s wonderful! Making music, whether on an instrument or with one’s voice, is incredibly helpful, according to both science and experience!

Music is more important than ever for children and teenagers. There is a lot of evidence to back up the many benefits of music lessons, so if you’re still on the fence about enrolling your kids in music classes, check out these 5 major advantages below!

Reduces Anxiety and Promotes Relaxation

Playing an instrument lowers cortisol levels, which reduces anxiety, according to research. Countless times, I’ve begun a piano or voice lesson with a teen student who appears tense or agitated, or even tells me he or she has had a difficult day.

However, as we progress through our session, I’ve witnessed a transformation in my students’ moods from tense and impatient to calm and joyous. They leave the lesson feeling lighter than when they arrived, which is a win for me!

Enhances Self-confidence and Self-esteem

Taking music lessons is a fantastic method for kids and teens to increase their self-esteem and confidence while also taking charge of their own development. During class, we create objectives for ourselves and work toward them. We try new things, even if they are difficult, and we succeed.

We practice, practice, and practice some more until we’ve mastered it. Seeing that sense of achievement and pride in my students when they acquire a new ability, master a scale, or perfect a piece is the very best part of teaching music.

Discipline is Taught and Structure is Provided

Weekly music classes provide structure while also instilling discipline and perseverance in students of all ages. Students are responsible for showing up for their session, signing on to the platform, getting their resources ready, and being prepared for the lesson, especially during virtual lessons.

They are aware that they will get their lesson at the same time each week and that they must practice during the week. Students learn that putting in the effort to practice improves their performance in class and allows them to grow more quickly. Students must struggle through the challenging parts of the piece and practice until they grasp the technique.

Language Skills are Improved

Learning an instrument, specifically the ability to discern between different pitches, has been shown to increase speech processing and language skills in children, according to research.

Taking music lessons before the age of 14 has also been shown to help people maintain their speech and listening abilities later in life.

Increases IQ

Because studying an instrument improves a variety of cognitive capacities, it raises overall IQ. Learning to play a musical instrument has been shown to boost one’s IQ by seven points!
