How Long Does CBD Stay in Your System?

CBD typically stays in your system for 2 to 5 days, but that range doesn’t apply to everyone. For some, CBD can stay in their system for weeks.

There isn’t a simple answer for how long CBD stays in your system. It depends on a number of factors, such as how it was administered, the dosage, and the frequency of use.

Let’s take a closer look at the different ways you can take CBD and how your body processes it.

What exactly happens when you take CBD anyway?

When you use CBD, you’ll feel the effects within 15 to 45 minutes. Precisely how long it takes depends on a bunch of factors including the dose you took and your body composition.

Your delivery method plays a role too. Vaped CBD enters your lungs and takes effect quickly. (Though you probably shouldn’t vape it.) Tablets and oils tend to kick in pretty fast too. But edibles, creams, and hard lotion bars usually take a little longer.

There are many different factors to consider that influence how long CBD stays in your system as well as how it affects you. How long it lasts and is detectable is not the same for everyone. It can depend on:

  • Physical factors and genetics, such as your metabolism, age, and weight;
  • Last time it was taken;
  • Dosage;
  • Frequency of use.

What happens in the body when CBD is taken orally?

If administered orally, CBD has low bioavailability of around 13-19%. The bioavailability of a drug (in this case CBD) is the amount of CBD that enters the circulation to produce an active effect.

To better understand the bioavailability of swallowed CBD, let’s compare it with an intravenous dose (directly into the vein) of CBD. When you take CBD or any other drug directly in the vein, the bioavailability of the drug is assumed to be 100%. This is because the drug is injected directly into the systemic circulation.

Things work differently in the body when you take a CBD capsule through the mouth. The capsule material travels through the organs and gets processed in the gut and the liver before reaching the systemic circulation.

The metabolic process of CBD and other drugs that get broken down by gut and/or liver enzymes is known as the “first-pass” metabolism.

The low absorption of orally administered CBD has been largely attributed to the first-pass metabolism where CBD gets processed by the gut and the liver.

How Long is CBD Detectable in Your Body

Generally, most cannabidiol clears out after a week since your last ingestion.

But surprisingly, evidence of CBD use can be detected in your body even much later.

It depends on how the tests are carried out:

  • Urine
  • Blood
  • Saliva
  • Hair

In a urine test, CBD may be detected within two weeks of use.

In blood tests, it may be detected within five hours.

In saliva tests within three days and in hair tests, a startling 90 days since last use.
