American Airlines selects Sabre as its reservations system

American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ: AAL) has issued a reservation system agreement with Sabre for its newly combined airline.

In partnership with Sabre, American Airlines will migrate to one reservation platform, setting the groundwork for a seamless travel experience for customers and employees alike, said Maya Leibman, chief information officer – American Airlines.

American Airlines and Sabre Airline Solutions have expanded their long-standing relationship, said Sabre Airline Solutions president Hugh Jones.

“American Airlines has outlined an exciting vision for transforming the user experience for airline passengers, and over the coming months we’ll be working closely with the airline to turn this vision into reality using our data-rich, flexible technology solutions,” Jones said. The new airline reservations system will deliver an exceptional travel experience across the entire journey thanks to a team of technology and delivery experts.”

According to Kerry Philipovitch, senior vice president of customer experience at American, “a single passenger services system will enable all employees to deliver information faster and with greater consistency across all touch points – and ultimately allow us to innovate in what we offer customers.”

As Sabre is currently being used by American Airlines, the integration should minimize disruption for the maximum number of people and systems by improving employee readiness, speeding up implementation, and improving customer responsiveness.

A customer’s travel experience is largely determined by an airline’s reservation system, which includes:

  • Customers and employees use the system to identify available flights that meet their travel requirements;
  • Checking in and boarding are handled by the system as well as flight status information and gate locations; and
  • Retrieving and checking luggage – airport employees use the airline’s reservation system to match luggage with destinations, improving efficiency and customer service.

It is expected that American and Sabre will take up to two years to complete the system integration.
